This Sunday: Inaugural OperaComp

This Sunday: Over the past several months, a team of artists from five different concentrations at school have been building OperaComp, Juilliard’s first new opera development laboratory.

Since shortly after the Election, you might have heard a catchy word buzzing around the halls of the school or dorms: OperaComp.

Over the past several months, a team of artists from five different concentrations at school have been building Juilliard’s first new opera development laboratory, what we’re calling OperaComp.

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ll be sharing the fruits of our first experiment with the public this Sunday, March 19th: the world-premiere of six opera scenes created by six creative teams comprised of over thirty artists from Juilliard, NYU and Columbia. Together we’ve cultivated a unique process of devising new work collaboratively from page to stage. OperaComp provides a home for artists and audiences of a new generation to share the complex, diverse human stories of our time, challenging age-old stereotypes about the art form in the process.

We’ve been creating this exciting new project hoping it may grow into a curriculum mainstay (think Play Labs in the Drama Division or ChoreoComp in the Dance Division), but this is the first time we’ve been able to harness the creative efforts of so many different divisions into the same student-organized initiative.

How can you attend this special event?

Since our space (studio 305) is limited, we have very few seats for the performances themselves, but we really want for the Juilliard community to be able to see these premieres. So, we’re opening up our dress rehearsal on Sunday morning and starting a wait list for the 2pm and 7pm performances.

Visit this Google form to request a seat.

Read on for more detailed info:

  1. DRESS REHEARSAL: The dress rehearsal, from 10am-1pm on Sunday, March 19th, in Room 305, is open to the entire Juilliard community. Due to the security desk opening at 11am, if you would like to attend beginning at 10am, you will need to email ceg3@juilliard.edu in addition to filling out the form below. Otherwise, you can simply swipe in beginning at 11am!
  2. PERFORMANCE WAITLIST: If you would like to be put on the waitlist for the March 19th performance(s), (2pm and 7pm), some tickets will be made available by Friday, March 17th. For those who would like to attend but don’t receive a ticket by then, you will automatically be put on the standby list; if you are, please come by 20 minutes prior to your designated showtime, and there should likely be a few last-minute seats available.
  3. HOUSE MANAGER: Want to bypass the waitlist and still see the performance? Sign up to volunteer as a House Manager! We still need volunteers to help guests (donors, administrators, industry VIPs) to their seats, check them in outside of 305, or check them in at the front desk. Anyone who can help for either of the performances or the dress rehearsal would be VERY appreciated!!

Pro tip: come to the dress rehearsal. You can come and go as you please and see some of the fun behind-the-scenes work. You could also show up at the door the day of and try your luck!

Although this is a student-run project, this could not have been possible without the dedicated support of the Vocal Arts, Composition, Drama, Production, Recording Departments along with Career Services, the Office of the President, and the full Juilliard Administration.

Note: Composition, Vocal Arts, Drama, Collaborative Piano, and all Faculty/Staff will have priority. Reservations are not guaranteed; please wait to hear from us if seats are available.
