About the Music:
We’re going BIG with the programming for this groupmuse! We don’t want to STRING you along, so we’ll tell you right away that we’re excited for this program.

Many of us at Juilliard are returning to NYC now that our summer travels abroad to festivals are ending, so this groupmuse would bring us back in the rhythm of performing together again!

In the first half, we will perform the timeless string quartet by Dvorak composed during his time in the United States:

Antonín Dvořák
String Quartet No. 12 in F Major, Op. 96 (“American”) (1893)
(~25 min)

—Intermission—

Mark Applebaum
Aphasia (2010) for body movement and tape
(~10 min)

Louis Andriessen
Workers Union (1975)
(~16 min)

For this last piece, we’ll be joined by percussion and saxophone to venture into music that was written for “any loud sounding group of instruments.” There are no specific pitches for each instrument, but everyone plays the notated rhythmic patterns. Our challenge will be as Andriessen describes: “It is difficult to play in an ensemble and to remain in step, sort of thing like organising and carrying on political action.”

Performers:
Tyler Cunningham (Percussion, BM ’19)
Zachary Hann (Clarinet, BM ’17)
Leerone Hakami (Violin, BM ’19)
Katherine Liu (MM, ’16)
Evan Saddler (Percussion, MM ’18)
Chloé Thominet (Viola, MM ’18)
Mosa Tsay (Cello, MM ’18)

The Juilliard Orchestra will present an enormous masterpiece, the Fourth Symphony of Dmitri Shostakovich, tonight, Tuesday, January 24 at 7:30pm. Around 120 musicians will be on stage in David Geffen Hall.

The piece was written under the political oppression of the USSR. This was experienced personally by Shostakovich, who was attacked by Stalin for creating music that is against his cultural and political view. In the rehearsal, Maestro Alan Gilbert told students: “This piece is very timely for what is happening to this country right now.”

The program begins with Dutilleux’s “Tout un monde lointain…” for solo cello and orchestra. Featured soloist will is concerto competition winner, Anne Richardson.

UPDATED: See below!

ShoutHouse is a dynamic group of artists and musicians from New York. They create art that allows people from many backgrounds to express themselves in one space. Formed in 2012 when members of an afro-beat/hip-hop band began collaborating with orchestral musicians, they have evolved into a 15-member ensemble of hip-hop, jazz, and classically-trained musicians and dancers that spreads a message of diversity and understanding through performance.
